Dedication[]

This episode is dedicated to a very special woman who is no longer with us.

Maw-Maw, you were my best friend and biggest fan. You could barely find your refrigerator due to all the pictures I drew and things I wrote you had plastered all over it. You always believed in me and told me to reach for the stars and that I can do anything I set my mind to. You never stopped believing in me and you always knew I'd one day make something of myself. I know that day hasn't come yet, but it's going to one day. I promise. I love you and miss you.Maggie Lou Taylor October 18, 1914 - April 16, 2010

Glee: The Next Generation Season 2, Episode 16: "Evan&B"[]

So here’s what you missed on Glee: The Next Generation:

Evan’s pretty frustrated because for one, he can’t touch his boyfriend without causing him to freak out at his touch. Also, he lost the solo at Regionals to Miles, his friend slash rival, and his ideas to do more R&B in Glee Club are pretty much ignored. There’s still another solo up for grabs at Internationals, but that’s a long time away and only if they win at Nationals this year. Jaxon and James reconciled and James quit hanging out with Aldy. On his way to apologize for his quick departure, James got cornered by a gang member. Jaxon stepped up to defend James, but he got stabbed. Now he has to have surgery or he’ll never play guitar again. Aldy saw the error of his ways and decided to head to rehab for his drinking problem. Also, Hallie got all dark and quit the Cheerios but thanks to Reece and Lana, she’s finally back to normal.

And that’s what you missed on Glee!

Will stepped into the choir room and took a look around at everyone. Emma was right behind him, her usual cheerful self.

“What’s Mrs. Pillsbury-Schuester doing here?” Miles asked.

“She’s here for support for you guys,” Will said. “We need to discuss a few things that’s happened and she’s here if you need to talk to her after were done.”

“I can see where this is going,” Jaxon said, running his hand along his bandage.

“You might be wondering why Aldy has been absent for four days. Aldy went into rehab for a drinking problem,” Will said.

“About time,” Bella said.

Will narrowed his eyes. “Be supportive, Bella. It’s hard for him. He’s going through a lot.”

“Not as much as we are,” Lana said. “My girlfriend had a crisis and my best friend got stabbed as an indirect result of him and his actions. Please forgive us for not being really supportive and feeling that this decision of his was long overdue.”

“I get it, guys,” Will said. “You all hold animosity toward Aldy due to the issues about Hallie’s babies’ father and Jaxon’s being stabbed. But to be fair, Aldy told me he had no idea what Chris had done in the past and he was genuinely sorry for what happened to Hallie.”

“But it was his damn turf war that got Jaxon hurt,” Miles said.

“Guys, can we not blame Aldy,” Jaxon said. “He didn’t stab me. A gang member did. And as far as I’m concerned I might have even been stabbed just for being on his turf, even if Aldy had never started a turf war. Things happen.”

“But if James had never went to see Aldy--” Miles started.

“So it’s really kind of James’ fault,” Taylor interrupted. “He’s the reason Jaxon could have died.”

“Let’s stop the blame game,” Will said. “I’m not playing. Accidents happen. And judging from what I’ve heard, you all could benefit from having a talk with Emma after this is over.”

“Especially James,” Taylor said.

James looked down, out of shame, feeling guilty for what had happened to Jaxon.

“Enough,” Will said. “Taylor, go to the principal’s office.”

“Whatever,” Taylor said. “This talk was boring me anyway.”

Taylor grabbed her backpack and walked out the door. The rest of the Glee Club was silent.

“Anyway,” Will said, “I was thinking about for this week, our lesson can be on songs about changing oneself for the better. Songs like Michael Jackson’s ‘Man in the Mirror’ for example.”

Evan raised his hand. “I was still thinking we can do a lesson dedicated to R&B. It’s an underappreciated genre and it’s good for dealing with the things we’re all feeling right now.”

“We just did R&B at Sectionals,” Will said.

“Now, we didn’t do R&B in general,” Evan said. “We did Janet Jackson. There are other deserving artists in R&B other than Janet Jackson.”

“I think that this lesson will resonate more with the other members who are dealing with a lot right now,” Will said.

“Like I’m not? Everyone is dealing with something, Mr. Schue. And I’ve set back and tried to enjoy when you did country music week. I mean, who dedicates an entire weeklong lesson to such a mundane and reductive music genre? Honkytonk badonkadonks, whiskey lullabies, thinking a tractor is sexy, big green tractors, discussing one’s favorite color being chrome—is this the stuff that truly great music is made of? I don’t think so. Did Celine Dion sing about honkytonk badonkadonks? No. Did the late great Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson, or Whitney Houston ever sing a song about a tractor and or its sex appeal? No. You have got to be kidding me!”

“I think that’s a little disrespectful to the musical tastes of others, Evan,” Will said.

“Get used to it. Mine has been disrespected since day one,” Evan said.

Evan stood up and grabbed his books.

“Where are you going?” Jaxon asked.

“I’m leaving,” Evan said. “I quit Glee Club. I hope you win Nationals. It was fun while it lasted but I can’t be part of such a close-minded group. RB demands some respect. In the past few years, it’s been disrespected, tossed aside and forgotten until one its great artists dies. And then the only R&B that matters is their songs. It’s so sad that such a great genre gets no respect.”

Evan stormed out of the choir room to another stunned silence.

“Well, should we continue?” Will asked.

“Evan just quit, Mr. Schue,” Miles said. “Don’t you care?”

“Of course I care but nothing I say to Evan can make up his mind,” Will replied. “He’s so stubborn.”

“Well, with all due respect, Mr. Schue, he was a point,” Lana said. “R&B is seriously overlooked. In life and in Glee Club. I admit, I’m not big on R&B. I’m more of a rocker chick, but Evan deserves to have a chance to pay tribute to his music, too.”

____________________________________________________________

Lana, Hallie, Jaxon, Miles, Breezy, James, and Honey walked down the hall together.

“I can’t believe Mr. Schue still shot the R&B idea down,” Lana said. “I made a good point.”

“Yeah, well Evan did too,” Miles said. “And Mr. Schue let him quit.”

“What does Mr. Schue have against R&B?” James asked.

“It’s not Journey,” Honey said.

The all laughed.

“No, for real, we should campaign to get Mr. Schue to do an R&B week,” Lana said. “Maybe we can get Evan to come back.”

“You heard what Mr. Schue said,” Miles replied. “He said and I quote, ‘loosing Evan is terrible, but we still have our thirteen members, barely. Just please none of you get sick or get suspended, expelled, or go to juvie.’ I rest my case, he doesn’t care.”

“Who knows,” Jaxon said.

“You don’t blame me for what happened to you, do you?” James asked.

“Of course not,” Jaxon said. “And once I have this surgery, things will eventually go back to normal.”

“What Taylor said--” James began.

“What Taylor said was her being a bitch,” Lana said.

“The guy she’s had a crush on for a while and just managed to get her claws into is going into rehab. He dumped her to focus on his recovery. She’s angry and she blames us,” Jaxon said. “Don’t listen to her.”

“Yeah,” Lana said. “I never listen to her.”

“Taylor is nowhere near as bad as India, but let’s all agree, she’s still a bitch,” Jaxon said.

“So when’s your surgery?” Breezy asked.

“Tomorrow,” Jaxon said. “I’ll be out for almost a week and then I’ll be missing P.E. for a few weeks, but I’m not complaining.”

“Good luck,” Honey said. ‘We’ll be praying for you.”

“Yes,” James said, smiling. “Even me.”

____________________________________________________________

The next day during Glee Club, with Jaxon gone, James decided to sit with Honey, Nicole, Breezy, and Miles. To everyone’s surprise, Will walked him with Adam. “Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to our newest member, Adam,” Will said. “You guys already know him so I know he’ll fit right in.”

“Not that I’m not happy to see him,” Miles said. “But you’re just gonna replace Evan like that?”

“Guys, Nationals is coming up. We don’t have time to dwell on this. We have to buckle down and get ready for this. We lost Nationals last year. Or have you forgotten?”

“Something about this just doesn’t seem right,” Nicole said.

Rose nodded. “It’s like we lose two of our members and we’re just supposed to replace them and move on?”

“Guys, please can we focus?” Will said.

Lana raised her hand. “We’re upset, Mr. Schue. Angry. We just want you to hear us out. We’ve lost Aldy for Nationals, fine. Let Adam replace him. But we don’t have to lose Evan. Can’t we just try to get him back and prepare for Nationals at the same time?”

“I agree,” Miles said.

“Me, too,” Kevin added.

“Let’s do R&B week,” Hallie said. “What can it hurt? Maybe it will convince Evan to come back. We don’t even have to put that much effort into it. I’m sure he’ll come back once he knows his ideas are being heard.”

“Fine,” Will said. “But you guys can’t lose focus on Nationals.”

“You’re sounding like a slave driver,” Kevin said.

“I only want what’s best for you,” Will said.

“Or is it what you want?” Rose said. “Cuz it seems like you’ve spent the entire past two days arguing what we want.”

Mr. Schue looked at Rose sternly.

“Sorry,” Rose said. “It’s how I see it.”

“I’ll give you guys your R&B week,” Will said with a sigh. “But we still need to find something else for Nationals. We’ll come off as repetitive after doing R&B at Sectionals.”

“Then I have the perfect song to sing,” Kevin said. “And it will give me an opportunity to show off how much I’ve improved and that I deserve a solo at Internationals.”

Will nodded. “Show us what you got, Kevin.”

Rose gave Kevin a high five as he got up and walked to the front of the room.

“I’m gonna need some help,” Kevin said. “Bella and Rose, would you come down here and back me up?”

Rose smiled. “Of course.”

Rose and Bella walked down and took their places behind the back-up microphones.

“Hurry up and wait,” Kevin sang. “So close, but so far away. Everything that you've always dreamed of, close enough for you to taste but you just can't touch. You wanna show the world, but no one knows your name yet. Wonder when and where and how you're gonna make it. You know you can if you get the chance. In your face as the door keeps slamming. Now you're feeling more and more frustrated and you're getting all kind of impatient waiting.”

“We live and we learn to take one step at a time,” Kevin sang with Bella and Rose backing him up. “There's no need to rush. It's like learning to fly or falling in love. It's gonna happen when it's supposed to happen and we find the reasons why one step at a time.”

“You believe and you doubt. You're confused, you got it all figured out. Everything that you always wished for could be yours, should be yours, would be yours if they only knew.

“When you can't wait any longer but there's no end in sight. When you need to find the strength. it's your faith that makes you stronger. The only way you get there is one step at a time.”

“We take one step at a time,” Kevin sang with Bella and Rose backing him up. “There's no need to rush. It's like learning to fly or falling in love. It's gonna happen when it's supposed to happen and we find the reasons why one step at a time. One step at a time. There's no need to rush. It's like learning to fly or falling in love. It's gonna happen when it's supposed to happen and we find the reasons why one step at a time.”

“That was great,” Will said amid the applause. “Good job, Kevin.”

Evan looked ahead of him at the large school that was Dalton. It reminded him of Hogwarts to be honest. He looked beside him at Nicole, who stood there.

“Thanks for coming with me,” Evan said. “I’m not that great with directions.”

“No problem. Gives us a chance to hang out since you quit Glee Club. Also, I get to see Dillon, which is a plus.”

Evan smiled. “Well, I appreciate it.”

“So may I ask you why you’re here?” Nicole asked as they walked through the doors and into the concourse.

“Just here to find out a few things. Pick the Warblers’ brains,” Evan answered.

“Good luck with X,” Nicole said. “I don’t think you’ll find much there.”

They both laughed as they approached the Warbler’s common room.

“So,” Nicole said. “I am going to meet Dillon in the open court and I’ll let you do your thing. You know where to find me when you’re ready to go.”

Evan smiled warmly at Nicole. “Thank you.”

“Hey, Evan,” Claude said as he walked to the door to greet Evan. “Chuck said you would coming. You wanted to talk to us? And does it concern the whole Jaxon and James issue.”

“Unfortunately, no,” Evan said. “This is strictly business.”

Claude looked sad. “Oh? Then we’re all ears.”

“Of course,” Chuck said, appearing behind Claude.

“Well, it’s like this,” Evan said. “I quit New Directions because Mr. Schue wouldn’t listen to my ideas.”

“Dalton doesn’t have a show choir director,” Chuck said. “We have an elected council and they hear everyone’s ideas and give them proper consideration."

“That’s kind of why I’m here,” Evan said. “I was thinking about transferring to Dalton.”

“Tuition’s kind of steep,” Claude said.

“I can afford it,” Evan said. “My dad’s a doctor. I just want to go someplace where I’m not overlooked. I joined the Black Student Union and I was treated like a pariah. I am half black, you know. Mr. Schue always shot down my ideas. McKinley has done nothing but cast me aside. I don’t fit in anymore.”

“Then I guess you have a choice to make,” Chuck said. “And if you decide to come to Dalton, you will not be overlooked, my friend.”

Evan stood there, considering Chuck’s statement.

The next day on the way to Glee Club, Miles took his books out of his backpack and shoved them in his locker. He shut his locker door and was shocked to see Taylor standing there.

“Hey, Miles,” Taylor said. “You used to be a badass at this school but ever since dating Breezy, you’ve lost your mojo. You’ve dropped three places on the social ladder at this school and you’re done yet. Things get serious, expect a free fall.”

“Why would you care?” Miles asked. “Aren’t you too busy still being hung up on Aldy?”

“I cared about Aldy, that’s true,” Taylor said. “But he just tossed me aside and it really hurt.”

“He went into rehab,” Miles said. “I think he should just focus on getting sober.”

“In case you haven’t noticed, my popularity has skyrocketed,” Taylor said. “Ever since India left, the student body is desperately looking for a new Queen Bee to hate and secretly look up to and aspire to be. And that Queen Bee is quickly becoming me.”

“And I care why?” Miles asked.

“Because, let’s face it, Miles. You’re insecure. And being the preppy jock that you are, secretly your reputation is everything. You lose that, and you’re gonna be really frustrated and possibly depressed. I’m just saying I could help boost your popularity back up. Miles Larson could rule this school again.”

“I like Breezy, okay? She’s one of the few people who get me and don’t judge me.”

“This is high school. You’re gonna be judged your whole life. Might as well make the most of it.”

Miles shook his head. Taylor took out a small piece of paper and stuffed it in Miles’ pocket.

“Here’s my number. Call me maybe?"

“I see what you did there,” Miles said.

Taylor winked as she turned around and walked off. Miles watched her for a second before heading to the choir room.

____________________________________________________________

Breezy didn’t look happy as she walked in and took a seat beside Miles. Taylor looked back, smiling at him. Breezy glared at her.

“Okay, class,” Will said. “Anyone want to deliver there assignment?”

Breezy raised her hand. “I would actually.”

“Come on up,” Will said, motioning.

Breezy walked to the front of the choir room and mouthed something to the band.

“This is a favorite song of mine and right now, it sums up how I feel,” Breezy said. “If you’ve been blessed with something as amazing as love, then you don’t need to let it go.”

Miles looked at Taylor and back at Breezy, slightly aware at the direction this might be taking.

“Honey and Nicole, will you guys come down here and back me up?” Breezy asked.

“I’ve always got your back,” Nicole said with a smile.

“What's it gonna be 'cuz I can't pretend?” Breezy sang with Honey and Nicole doing backing vocals. “Don't you want to be more than friends? Hold me tight and don't let go. Don't let go. You have the right to lose control. Don't let go.”

“I often tell myself that we could be more than just friends,” Breezy sang. “I know you think that if we move too soon it would all end. I live in misery when you're not around. And I won't be satisfied till we're taking those vows.”

“There'll be some love making, heart breaking, soul shaking love,” Nicole and Honey sang. “Love making, heart breaking, soul shaking.”

“What's it gonna be 'cuz I can't pretend?” Breezy sang with Honey and Nicole doing backing vocals. “Don't you want to be more than friends? Hold me tight and don't let go. Don't let go. You have the right to lose control. Don't let go.”

“I often fantasize the stars above are watching you,” Breezy sang. “They know my heart, it speaks to yours like only lovers do. If I could wear your clothes I'd pretend I was you and lose control.”

“Running in and outta my life has got me so confused,” Breezy sang. “You gotta make the sacrifice, somebody's gotta choose. We can make it if we try for the sake of you and I. Together we can make it right.”

“Can't keep a running,” Nicole and Honey sang. “In and outta my life outta my outta my life. You've got the right, you've got the right, I said you've got the right to lose control, yeah.”

“What's it gonna be 'cuz I can't pretend?” Breezy sang with Honey and Nicole doing backing vocals. “Don't you want to be more than friends? Hold me tight and don't let go. Don't let go. You have the right to lose control. Don't let go. Don't let go, don't let go. What's it gonna be 'cuz I can't pretend. Don't you want to be more than friends? Hold me tight and don't let go. Don't let go. You have the right to lose control. Don't let go. What's it gonna be? Don’t let go. Don't you want to be? Don’t let go. Hold me tight and don't let go. Don’t let go.”

Breezy looked at Miles as she ended the song.

____________________________________________________________

“What was that in there?” Miles asked as he followed Breezy out of the choir room.

“You know very well what it was,” Breezy said. “I saw you and Taylor. Oh, she has such eyes for you. And you stood there and took it.”

“I was trying to figure out her angle,” Miles replied.

Breezy scoffed. “Uh huh.”

“Look,” Miles said. “I know that I’ve cheated in the past. I cheated on Bella with India and I cheated on Rose--”

“Rose?” Breezy asked. “When did you date Rose?”

“Freshman year, fresh off her break-up with Kevin. It sucks to be a rebound. Anyway, what I’m saying is, that’s not me anymore. I’m not gonna cheat on anyone again. I realized how much it can hurt someone.”

“Do you think she’s prettier than me?” Breezy asked.

“I don’t want to get into who’s prettier,” Miles said. “That doesn’t matter. All that matters is I care about you and I’m dating you. You are my girl, not Taylor. So just relax.”

“So, let me get this straight,” Breezy said. “Nicole, Hallie, Lana, and Taylor are the only girls in Glee Club you haven’t dated?”

“Sadly, yes,” Miles said. “I had a reputation in the past. But it’s just that. In the past.”

“I don’t know what to think,” Breezy said. “Considering how two of those you probably never dated just because they’re lesbians.”

“That’s crazy,” Miles said. “I mean, sure I thought Lana was hot in a she-can-kick-my-butt kind of way, but I’ve never even thought of Hallie that way.”

“Maybe because being a teenage boy, the two kids scared you off. Miles, I just need time to think, okay?”

“Breezy, wait,” Miles said.

Breezy didn’t look back as she walked down the hall.

____________________________________________________________

Hallie stood in the girl’s bathroom, looking over the clothes she now wore in the pace of her Cheerio’s uniform. She felt so different, so imperfect.

Sure, I have been blessed with such a great girlfriend. She loves me no matter what. I guess I should be pretty thankful for that because I’m pretty messed up. And all this that happened with Chris made me realize just how much of a train wreck I was.

Hallie stared blankly in the mirror, examining herself as she began to sing.

“I'm a train wreck in the morning,” Hallie sang. “I'm a bitch in the afternoon. Every now and then without warning I can be really mean towards you. I'm a puzzle, yes indeed. Ever complex in every way and all the pieces aren't even in the box. And yet, you see the picture clear as day. I don't know why you love me and that's why I love you. You catch me when I fall. Accept me flaws and all and that's why I love you. And that’s why I love you, and that’s why I love you.”

The scene changed to Hallie standing on the front porch watching as Lana played with Eva and Ethan. They plodded over to her and into her arms. She lifted them up and spun them around, the three of them giggling.

“I neglect you when I'm working,” Hallie sang, “When I need attention I tend to nag. I'm a host of imperfection and you see past all that. I'm a peasant by some standards but in your eyes I'm a queen. You see potential in all my flaws and that's exactly what I mean. I don't know why you love me and that's why I love you. You catch me when I fall. Accept me flaws and all and that's why I love you. And that’s why I love you, and that’s why I love you. I don't know why you love me and that's why I love you. You catch me when I fall. Accept me flaws and all and that's why I love you. And that’s why I love you, and that’s why I love you.”

As the song came to an end, Lana was rolling on the ground. Hallie laughed.

“Again,” Eva said.

“No, not again,” Lana said, standing up and brushing herself off. “Mama Lala’s tired. Let’s go see Mommy.”

Eva and Ethan took off running toward Hallie, who scooped them up in her arms. She looked at Lana and smiled.

“You’re amazing,” Hallie said.

Lana blushed.

James knocked on the doorframe of Jaxon’s hospital room. He clutched a bouquet of peonies and a stuffed teddy bear. Jaxon looked up and smiled.

“Come in,” Jaxon said.

“Hey,” James said, quietly. He walked uncomfortably into the room.

James put the flowers into the vase that sat on Jaxon’s beside table.

“Have a seat,” Jaxon said, pointing to the chair beside the bed.

“I uh, can’t help feeling like it’s my fault you’re here,” James said, taking a seat.

“I told you, James. It’s not. I promised no one would ever hurt you again. I am the one who decided to drive himself between that knife and you. I did this, because I love you.”

“But if I hadn’t have gone back--”

“Aldy was creating a lot of trouble. It was only a matter of time before something like this happened. Aldy and his friends have been street racing in Lima Heights for three years now. Long before you, okay. Please stop blaming yourself, okay?”

“I can’t help but see you laying there and thinking that it’s not right,” James said. “It shouldn’t be like this.”

“But it is, okay? Things happen. I could have torn my tendon playing football or something. This could have happened at any time, any other way. That’s life.”

“Want me to stay with you for a while?” James asked.

Jaxon nodded. “Yes, please.”

Evan walked through the halls of Dalton for his second time this week. When he got to the common room, Claude and Chuck were the first ones to greet him.

“So, have you come to a decision?” Chuck asked, perhaps a bit too enthused.

“Actually, I have,” Evan said.

“And what’s your decision?” Claude asked.

“I got the paperwork to transfer. My parents have wrote a check for the first month’s tuition. Provided I like it here and want to stay, the rest of tuition will follow. I’ve already talked to the Dean of Admissions and it’s all in order. I just need my uniform.”

“Actually,” Claude said, “Chuck and I had something to ask you first.”

“Oh?” Evan asked, intrigued.

“You said that New Direction didn’t give you the opportunity to sing the music you wanted,” Claude said. “Nicole mentioned that you had been campaigning for an R&B lesson. You’re in at Dalton, and though we know your talent, it wouldn’t be fair to just let you join the Warblers. Care to sing one of those R&B songs as an audition?”

“I would be happy to,” Evan said.

“Show us what you got,” Chuck said.

“I can love you with my eyes closed,” Evan sang. “I see your heart through a blind fold. I ain’t never ever met another better. So my baby ain’t no way that I’ma let go. From the north to the south pole, on the east or the west coast. Every area code, all over the globe, ain’t nowhere on the planet you can go that I won’t. From sun up to sun down, I’ll always be around. Every minute of every hour, still it ain’t enough time.”

Chuck and Claude began to bob their head to the beat.

“Cause I got days and days of love, for you boy and I don’t wanna have to rush. But twenty-four seven ain’t enough. Cause I got so much love for you boy. I need another hour and a day ao I can love you twenty-five eight, twenty-five eight. You ain’t gotta worry about me, no, ain’t no question at my loyalty. You been there for me, even when nobody cared enough to check and see if I was breathing. See don’t nobody really know me, know me. You and me, we got history. So I give you applause for loving me boy, put your hand in my hand, I'll lead the way out.”

Dillon stepped into the room, standing back and watching Evan perform.

“From sun up to sun down, I’ll always be around. Every minute of every hour still it ain’t enough time. Cause I got days and days of love, for you boy and I don’t wanna have to rush. But twenty-four seven ain’t enough. Cause I got so much love for you boy. I need another hour and a day ao I can love you twenty-five eight. Can't nobody give me love, give me love like I need. See I love the way you make me smile when things ain’t going right. You know how to hold me tight, can make the pain go away, yeah. Every day baby, every night, baby. On the week day, on any day. On every day, I’m alive baby. I’ma love you, help me sing it out. Every day baby, every night baby. On the week day, on any day. On every day, I’m alive baby. I’ma love you, help me sing it out.”

Dillon mouthed something to Claude and Chuck, who agreed.

“Days and days and days of love, for you boy and I don’t wanna have to rush. But twenty-four seven ain’t enough. Cause I got so much love for you boy. I need another hour and a day ao I can love you twenty-five eight.”

Dillon was the first to applaud as he walked around to join Chuck and Claude.

“Word from Dean Pennbrook is that Evan Marx of the famed New Direction just transferred to Dalton Academy,” Dillon said. “So, guys, we’re agreed here?”

“Yes,” Chuck said.

“Welcome to the Warblers,” Dillon said. “With you, we’re sure to win at Sectionals next year. But first, we wanna hear some of your great ideas.”

Evan smiled.

Lucas walked down the hall, thinking about how much he missed Evan and how he couldn’t wait to get to home and call him.

All of a sudden, he began to dance down the hall, giddily.

“Can't wait to get home, baby dial your number,” Lucas sang as he danced down the hallway. “Can you pick up the phone 'cause I wanna holla? Daydreaming about you all day in school, can't concentrate. Want have your voice in my ear till Ma comes and says it's too late. Cause the lights are on outside, wish there was somewhere to hide cause I just don't want to say goodbye cause you are my baby, baby. Nothing really matters, I don't really care what nobody tell me. I'm gonna be here. It's a matter of extreme importance, my first teenage love affair.”

Lucas closed his eyes and remembered one of his and Evan’s between class meet-ups.

“I love our secret meeting, on the fifth floor stair case. I'm gonna give you this letter of all the things I can't say. Want you to be my first, my last, my ending and beginning. I wrote your name in my book. Your last name, my first. I'm your mister. Cause the lights are on outside, wish there was somewhere to hide cause I just don't want to say goodbye cause you are my baby, baby. Nothing really matters, I don't really care what nobody tell me. I'm gonna be here. It's a matter of extreme importance, my first teenage love affair.”

Lucas threw open the doors and danced his way into the courtyard.

“Hey boy, you know I really like being with you right? Just hanging out with you is fun. So maybe we can go to first base because I feel you. Second base, want you to feel me too. Third base, better pump the breaks. Well baby, slow down. I gotta go home now. Cause the lights are on outside, wish there was somewhere to hide cause I just don't want to say goodbye cause you are my baby, baby. Nothing really matters, I don't really care what nobody tell me. I'm gonna be here. It's a matter of extreme importance, my first teenage love affair. My baby, baby. Nothing really matters, I don't really care what nobody tell me. I'm gonna be here. It's a matter of extreme importance, my first teenage love affair.”

Lucas took out his cellphone and dialed Evan’s number. After five rings, it went to voicemail.

As Evan stood in the Warbler’s common room, he took out his cellphone and looked at who was calling. As bad as he didn’t want to, he wasn’t ready to tell Lucas. He silenced the call and shoved it back in his pocket.

“Have you told the others, yet?” Chuck asked.

“No,” Evan said, looking down.

“Don’t you think you need to?” Claude asked. “The sooner you do it, the better.”

Evan nodded.

Will sat in the audience as New Directions stood onstage in silver shirts and leather pants. A wall of yellow bulbs was erected behind them, casting them into a beautiful golden light.

“It's been a long time, long time,” James sang. “I shouldn’t have left you, left you. Without a dope beat to step to, step to, step to, step to, step to. It's been a long time, long time. We shouldn’t have left you, left you. Without a dope beat to step to, step to, step to, step to, step to.”

“What would you do to get to me?” Honey sang, stepping forward and propping her arm on James’s shoulder. “What would you say to have your way? Would you give up or try again if I hesitate to let you win?”

“Or would you be yourself or play your role?” Rose sang, stepping forward to prop her arm on James’ other shoulder. “Tell all the boys or keep it low? If I say no, would you turn away? Or play me off or would you stay?”

“If at first you don't succeed, dust yourself off and try again.” New Directions sang, breaking out into a dance routine. “You can dust it off and try again, try again. Cuz if at first you don't succeed, you can dust it off and try again. Dust yourself off and try again, again, again.”

“I'm into you,” Nicole sang, stepping forward and leaning on Lucas. “You into me, but I can’t let it go so easily. Not 'til I see what this could be. Be eternity or just a week? You know, our chemistry is off the chain. It’s perfect now but will it change?”

“This ain’t a yes,” Bella sang, stepping forward to lean on Lucas’ other side. “This ain’t a no. Just do your thing. We'll see how it goes, oh.”

“If at first you don't succeed, dust yourself off and try again.” New Directions sang. “You can dust it off and try again, try again. Cuz if at first you don't succeed, you can dust it off and try again. Dust yourself off and try again, try again.

“If you dont wanna throw it all away,” Honey and Rose sang. “Might be shy on the first date. What about the next date? Huh, huh, huh, huh?”

“If you dont wanna throw it all away,” Nicole and Bella sang. “You might be bugging on the first date. But what about the next date? Huh, huh, huh, huh?”

“If at first you don't succeed, dust yourself off and try again.” New Directions sang. “You can dust it off and try again, try again. Cuz if at first you don't succeed, you can dust it off and try again. Dust yourself off and try again, again, again.

“It's been a long time, long time,” Lucas sang. “I shouldn’t have left you, left you. Without a dope beat to step to, step to, step to, step to, step to. It's been a long time, long time. We shouldn’t have left you, left you. Without a dope beat to step to, step to, step to, step to, step to. One more again. New millennium, we out baby.”

Will applauded. “Alright, guys. Good job but let’s get back to the choir room and hammer out some ideas for our Nationals set list.”

Will was taken slightly aback as Evan stepped quietly into the choir room. He looked down at the floor as he made his way to the front of the room.

“I have an announcement,” Evan said, looking up.

Will nodded. “Go ahead.”

“I expect you all are thinking that I am about to announce my triumphant return to New Directions,” Evan said. “But I’m not. I’m not going to return to New Directions. In fact, I’m transferring to Dalton Academy.”

“What?” Lucas said. “Evan?”

“You can’t leave us, man,” Miles said.

“I can and I am,” Evan said. “It’s nothing against any of you. It’s just that my musical tastes have constantly been overlooked in Glee Club. We’ve had a week dedicated to everything but what I’ve been campaigning for since I joined Glee Club. I’m tired of being pushed to the background. This time last year, Miles had just gotten comfortable to singing lead. Now it seems that he gets all my solos.”

“That’s not fair,” Miles said. “You had more solos than I did last year.”

“I haven’t had one important solo, Miles. And you’re always leading group numbers. I wanna feel like part of the group, too. And I never have a say in group decisions. And I was a good sport about dedicating a week to the horrible musical genre that is country.”

“Guys, let’s not fight,” Will said.

“I’m not trying to fight,” Evan said. “I just wanna feel important to my show choir. And I don’t. So, I’m going to Dalton. They have no director, so all Warblers get a say in how they do things. My opinion will finally matter.”

“Can we please talk about this?” Breezy said. “We may be broken up, but we’re still friends and I still care about you.”

“Jaxon isn’t gonna be happy that he missed this,” James said. “He’d want a chance to try to convince you to stay.”

“I’ve made up my mind, guys,” Evan said. “My parents already paid the first month’s tuition and I’ve already received my uniform. I’ll miss you guys, but I will still visit you all.”

Will nodded silently. “If this is what you feel you have to do, Evan.”

“It is,” Evan replied. “I see that this is my future. I had a great time here, but I felt like I didn’t matter enough.”

“You did matter,” Lucas said. “You always mattered.”

“To you,” Evan said. “Not to everyone. Most of these guys hated me the first few months.”

“But you changed,” Hallie said. “That’s in the past, Evan.”

“And besides, Mr. Schue dedicated a whole week to R&B,” Bella said.

“Only after I quit in an effort to get me to come back,” Evan said. “Glee Club finally does R&B and I had to miss it. It shouldn’t have taken me leaving to finally get my ideas heard.”

“You’re right,” Lana said. “A lot of us don’t get our ideas heard.”

“I’m trying to work on that,” Will said.

“It’s too late anyway,” Evan said. “I’ll be going now.”

Evan turned around and walked out the door and into the hall.

Evan stood onstage in the April Rhodes Civic Pavilion, a spotlight beating down on him as he prepared to sing his swan song.

“How do I say goodbye to what we had?” Evan sang, looking straight ahead. “The good times that made us laugh outweigh the bad.”

As he sang, all the good memories he had with New Directions flashed through his head. Sneaking out in Vegas, dancing in the streets of London, performing Kesha in the cafeteria, the snowball fight on Christmas Eve, singing karaoke on New Year’s Eve. All the wins at Sectionals and Regionals.

“I thought we'd get to see forever but forever's gone away. It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday. I don't know where this road is going to lead. All I know is where we've been and what we've been through.”

Evan remembered visiting Lucas in the hospital, leading the protest down the halls of McKinley, the loss at Nationals, and rushing to the hospital when Jaxon was stabbed.

“If we get to see tomorrow, I hope it's worth all the wait. It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday. And I'll take with me the memories to be my sunshine after the rain. It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.”

The scene changed and Evan stood in front of a mirror as he adjusted his tie and stepped back to admire his Warbler’s uniform.

“And I'll take with me the memories to be my sunshine after the rain. It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.”

As the song ended, Evan was transported back to reality. He threw open the front doors to Dalton Academy and marched into his new home.
