Glee: The Next Generation Season 2, Episode 9: "Fear/Fearless"Edit

So here’s what you missed on Glee: The Next Generation:

Last year, Lucas was forced out of the closet by Azimio and his own best friend, Louis disowned him. New student Chad Riker-Smith beat up Lucas and put in him in the hospital. Jaxon and the GSA protested through the halls of McKinley and now it’s time for Chad to be released from jail. Honey found out her real mother is Shelby Corcoran, making her and Rachel half-sisters. James is hanging with a bad crowd and he’s already gotten hurt and started smoking. Hallie and Lana are dating now and Lana joined New Directions after the Femme Fatales disbanded due to loosing Sectionals, which New Directions won. India got expelled for all her previous bad deeds, but bad girl Taylor Atkinson has joined New Directions in her place.

And that’s what you missed on Glee!

Honey wiped a tear from her eye as she crouched in front of her parent’s grave. She gently sat a rose on the tombstone, her hand trembling.

Two years, Honey thought. You’ve both been gone two years today. I love Hiram and Leroy, but you raised me for fifteen years. And blood or not, you were my mother. This is so hard. I look up to the sky and I pray. I ask that you can hear me. I miss you both so much.

“Honey?” James asked from behind her. Honey rose up and turned around, a look of surprise on her face.

“I came to pay my respects to my parents,” Honey said. “I didn’t want to hurt Hiram and Leroy’s feelings but I had to come. It’s been exactly two years.”

“They won’t be hurt, Honey. Those people raised you most of your life. They’d understand.”

“Yeah, I guess,” Honey said, biting her lip.

“You came all this way by yourself?” James asked.

“Yes,” Honey replied. “How did you know?”

“I watched you sneaking out so I followed you. Want me to walk you home?”

Honey nodded. “Yeah, that would be great.”

As they turned around, Honey saw it. John’s tombstone. She hadn’t been here since the funeral. She couldn’t bring herself to come.

I could have always lied to myself and pretended John was just visiting some far off place, but this…this puts a very definite end to him. The date is written in stone and now John is just a block of slate in the ground. God, has it been this long since he died? Almost four months?

James sensed Honey’s discomfort and put his arm around her as he pulled her away and walked toward the gravel road that lead away from the cemetery.

“I miss having a mother,” Honey said. “There are some things a girl just needs her mother for.”

“You still have a mother,” James replied. “Shelby, remember?”

“I’ve never even met her. I’ve heard her sing. Rachel has a tape she made. She sang ‘I Dreamed a Dream.’ She has a very pretty voice.”

“Maybe you should meet Shelby,” James suggested. “Get to know her.”

Honey thought for a second, seriously considering James’ suggestion.

Honey sat quietly in the choir room as Will walked in and took a look around.

“I hope everyone enjoyed Thanksgiving,” Will said. “Good to see you all back from Thanksgiving break.”

“Everything is quieter in here,” Rose said. “I guess it’s because India is not here anymore.

“It doesn’t feel like it’s been almost a month since she got expelled,” Miles said.

“India was a pest at this school anyway,” Taylor said. “I’m glad she’s gone. Good riddance.”

Will looked at Honey, concerned.

“Honey?” Will asked. “Are you okay? You seem a little down.”

“I’ve just been thinking,” Honey said.

“About what?” Will asked. “I’d love to help you if I can.”

“Yesterday was the second anniversary of my parent’s death. I really love my new dads, but I still miss my parents, especially my mom.”

Honey was gonna add more, but after thinking for a second, she decided against it. Will could tell by the look in her eyes that there was more she wasn’t saying.

“It’s normal to miss your loved one after they’ve passed away,” Will said.

“Could I sing a song?” Honey asked.

Will nodded. “Of course, Honey. That’s what Glee Club is for. By all means, the floor is yours.”

Honey smiled in appreciation as she got up and walked to the front of the choir room.

“Could you play ‘Mama Who Bore Me,’ please?” Honey asked Brad, who nodded.

“Mama who bore me,” Honey sang, thinking about the tape with Shelby’s voice. “Mama who gave me no way to handle things, who made me so sad. Mama, the weeping. Mama, the angels. No sleep in Heaven, or Bethlehem.”

Honey stopped for a second as a tear rolled down her cheek. She quickly wiped it away as James nodded at her, giving her the strength to continue.

“Some pray that one day Christ will come a' calling. They light a candle and hope that it glows. And some just lie there, crying for him to come and find them but when he comes they don't know how to go. Mama who bore me, Mama who gave me no way to handle things, who made me so bad. Mama, the weeping. Mama, the angels. No sleep in Heaven, or Bethlehem.”

Will didn’t applaud with the rest. “Is this about Shelby?”

Honey nodded. “She’s the woman who gave birth to me. I want to know more about her.”

“I can tell you from experience that it’s not the best idea,” Will said. “Rachel was nearly devastated by it, Honey.”

Honey nodded as she took her seat beside James, not really listening.

The next day, Jaxon and Lana walked together to a table in the lunchroom. Jaxon took a seat beside James, who was once again wearing sunglasses. Jaxon sighed.

“Let me guess, another injury?” Jaxon asked.

James didn’t say anything. He took a drink of milk and just sat there.

“The least you can do is say something,” Jaxon said.

James got up and walked over to the trashcan. He dumped his tray and walked out the door.

“What the hell has gotten into him?” Jaxon asked Lana, who shrugged.

“No telling with the crowd he’s hanging with,” Lana said. “Honey’s worried about him too. Says he stays out until at least one a.m. every morning. She has to get up and sneak him in. She’s getting tired of it.”

“Why hasn’t she told me?” Jaxon asked.

“She’s worried about what you would do,” Lana explained. “She firmly believes he’s just a lost little puppy that’s fallen in with a pack of wolves. She’s afraid if you were to jump into this, it could adversely affect James and that you might end up getting hurt by some of his wolf pack buddies.”

“God, I feel like I’m in Twilight,” Jaxon mused.

“My suggestion is, if you both aren’t happy, if he barely speaks to you or spends time with you, maybe it’s time to let him go,” Lana said. “I love you as a friend, I support you, and yes, I even ship Jameson. But, maybe you both need time to experience the world as Jaxon and James and not just Jameson.”

Jaxon thought for a moment, considering his options.

Lucas sighed heavily as he shut his locker. Evan appeared beside him, smiling. His smile quickly faded when he saw the look on Lucas’ face.

“What’s wrong?” Evan asked.

“I really don’t wanna talk about it,” Lucas said.

“Surely, you can talk to me about anything,” Evan said. “I’m your boyfriend.”

“I just found out Chad got released yesterday. He’s returning to McKinley tomorrow. I am so scared, Evan. Chad hates me and he could have killed me. What’s going to stop him from attacking me again?”

“Me,” Evan said. “He’s never gonna lay another hand on you as long as I live, Lucas. I will defend you with my life.”

“I shouldn’t have to be afraid to walk outside my house,” Lucas added.

“I was there every day, you know,” Evan said. “I came by the hospital every day, even the two days you were put under. I had to know you were okay.”

Lucas smiled. “Even then you loved me?”

“Yes,” Evan said. “You are my true love, Lucas. I just wished it didn’t take a near tragedy to help me realize that.”

Lucas wrapped his arms around Evan and leaned in for a hug. “I love you, Evan. I never feel scared when I’m in your arms. I wish I could just stay here all day. Chad could never hurt me.”

“You listen to me, Lucas,” Evan said. “Chad is never gonna hurt you again. I promise.”

Evan kissed the top of Lucas’ head as Lucas smiled.

“I have to get going,” Evan said. “Wait for me after school. I’ll drive you home.”

Lucas nodded. “Thanks, baby.”

Lucas watched as Evan walked toward his classes. Lucas clutched his books tightly.

“Hey, hey, hey ,” Lucas sang. “Hey, hey, hey. Ooh whoa ooh, ooh. I'm scared to try cause I'm scared to fail. I'm scared to die cause I'm scared of hell. I'm scared to kiss, scared to hug. I’m scared of sex cause I'm scared to touch.”

As he sang, Lucas walked down the hallway, clutching his books.

“I'm scared to look cause I'm scared to see. I'm scared of you cause I'm scared of me. I'm scared to fly cause I'm scared to crash. I'm scared to move on so I live in the past. I'm scared to fight cause I'm scared to bleed. I'm scared of love cause I'm scared he'll leave. I'm scared of drugs, I'm scared to drink. I'm scared to swim cause I'm scared to sink. I'm scared to learn cause I'm scared of truth. Don't wanna gain weight cause I'm scared of food. I'm scared to think that the label dropped me. I'm scared to think of my album flopping. This may sound silly but it's true. So don't pretend it ain't you too. We all afraid of something here ‘cause you ain't human without fear. Hey, hey, hey. Hey, hey, hey. Ooh whoa ooh, ooh.”

Lucas closed his eyes and when he opened them, he was back in the choir room. He had been replaying the scene with Evan from earlier that day in his head.

“I'm scared to start cause I'm scared I'll quit. I'm scared that people won't like my hit. I'm scared of fame and paparazzi, rumors starting and people watching. Scared to grow up cause I'm scared to grow old. Scared of the dark and being alone. I'm scared of war, I'm scared of jail. Scared to share a secret cause I'm scared you'll tell. This may sound silly but it's true. So don't pretend it ain't you too. We all afraid of something here ‘cause you ain't human without fear. Hey, hey, hey. Hey, hey, hey. Hey, hey, hey, yeah, yeah.”

“Great job,” Will said. “I really appreciate you showing your vulnerable side, Lucas.”

“Thank you, Mr. Schue,” Lucas said as he walked back to take his seat beside Evan.

“I have some news, guys,” Will said, walking to the front of the choir room. “Bella has stated that she wants the solo at Nationals, meaning the solo at Regionals is up for grabs. Seeing as the Sectionals and Nationals soloists are girls, I’m thinking the Regionals and Internationals soloists should be guys.”

“Awesome,” Kevin said.

“Which means,” Will continued. “The next few weeks you guys are gonna be battling it out to earn that Regionals solo.”

“It’s so mine,” Miles said.

“Better think twice,” Evan said. “I plan on landing it myself.”

“I think I have a shot,” Kevin said. “I really want a solo.”

“It’s great to see you all enthusiastic about this,” Will said, smiling.

Emma shifted in her seat, watching Bella.

“I mean, I know that it’s only been a month since Hallie dumped me, but I think it’s been long enough. Reece is really cute.”

“I’m confused,” Emma said. “I can’t tell if you came to see me as your counselor or as your aunt.”

“Kinda both,” Bella replied.

“Because my advice differs greatly depending on how you approach me. The aunt in me wants to say, ‘slow down, Bella. You’re going way too fast. You’re the teenage queen of rebounds.’ But then the counselor in me wants to say, ‘perhaps it’s best to move on. There are plenty of fish in the sea.’ It’s madness.”

“I like the counselor advice best,” Bella said. “Do I get to choose?”

“I don’t think it works like that,” Emma answered. “Does Reece like you, too? I mean, is the feeling mutual?”

“I think so,” Bella said. “He smiled at me during Sectionals. I haven’t been around him much.”

“Don’t you think maybe you’re going a little too fast? You’re developing a crush on a guy you barely know, you’ve only been out of a relationship for a little under a month. Before that you jumped from into one relationship, into another, then into another. You really should slow down, Bella. No wonder you were confused. You’re like a dating bunny rabbit. Hop, hop, hop, hop.”

Bella didn’t look too happy. Emma cleared her throat.

“Well, I guess that concludes our hour,” Emma said. “Would you like to schedule another with me some other time?”

Bella shook her head. “No thanks. I think I can do this on my own.”

“That’s what I was afraid of,” Emma said to herself as Bella walked out the door.

The next morning, Lucas swallowed his fear as he walked into McKinley. He made his way down a crowded hallway, scanning the halls for any sight of Chad.

Back in the auditorium, Evan stood onstage, dressed all in black against a black curtain backdrop, a small spotlight focused on him, the only light.

I’ve got to win that Regionals solo and prove myself, Evan thought.

“So you think I'm alone?” Evan sang. “But being alone's the only way to be. When you step outside, you spend life fighting for your sanity. This is a cold war. You better know what you're fighting for. This is a cold war. Do you know what you're fighting for?”

Lucas turned and headed down another hall. He was obviously nervous, cowering at every sudden movement.

“If you want to be free,”Evan sang. “Below the ground is the only place to be. 'Cause in this life, you spend time running from depravity. This is a cold war. Do you know what you're fighting for? This is a cold war. You better know what you're fighting for. This is a cold war. You better know what you're fighting for. This is a cold war. Do you know what you're fighting for?”

Lucas stopped dead in his tracks as he saw Chad. He swallowed the growing lump in his throat and quickly turned around. Chad saw him and started after him.

“Bring wings to the weak and bring grace to the strong. May all evil stumble as it flies in the world. All the tribes come and the mighty will crumble. We must brave this night and have faith in love.”

“Come back,” Chad said as he walked after Lucas, who made a beeline down the hall.

“I'm trying to find my peace. I was made to believe there's something wrong with me and it hurts my heart. Lord have mercy, ain't it plain to see? That this is a cold war. Do you know what you're fighting for? This is a cold war. You better know what you're fighting for. This is a cold, this is a cold war. You better know what you're fighting for. Do you know? It's a cold, do you? Do you? It's a cold, you better know what you're fighting for.”

Lucas threw open the auditorium door and ran up the aisle. Evan saw him and immediately rushed down to meet him. Evan threw his arms around him and held him as Lucas began to cry.

“Shh,” Evan said. “Everything’s alright. I’m here. He’s not gonna hurt you.”

Jaxon walked down the hall, not really paying attention to where he was going. He was taken by surprise when someone tugged at his letterman jacket and pulled him around the corner. It was James.

“Please talk to me,” James said, his speech slurred.

Jaxon raised an eyebrow. “About?”

“I’m sorry about lunch yesterday at lunch. Could you forgive me?”

Jaxon sniffed James. He turned his head away in disgust. “You’re drunk, James.”

“I just had a little with Aldy. It’s no big deal.”

“Yes, it is,” Jaxon said. “Teen drinking is a very big deal. Are you insane?”

“Kiss me, please,” James said, leaning in to kiss Jaxon.

Jaxon tried to resist as James pressed his lips to his. “James! You’re drunk! Get off!”

James pulled Jaxon’s shirt up and started to run his hand up Jaxon’s abs. Jaxon pushed James’ hands away and yanked his shirt down.

“We’re at school, James! What the hell are you thinking?” Jaxon asked.

“You never touch me anymore,” James said.

Jaxon shook his head in disbelief as she started to back away. “Maybe Lana was right. Maybe we need a break. At least until you straighten yourself out and realize who and what is really important to you.”

“Jaxon,” James said, tears forming in his eyes. “No, don’t go. You are. I swear. I can stop the drinking and smoking. I promise.”

“Your promises used to mean something, James. Now I don’t even know who you are anymore.”

James watched as Jaxon walked away, his hand stuffed into his jacket pockets. James fought back tears as he reared back and hit the wall. Upon impact, he grabbed his hand, clutching it tightly.

“Ow,” he said.

____________________________________________________________

Lana took a seat beside Jaxon, who sat on the opposite side of the auditorium from James. Jaxon’s eyes looked heavy, as if he’d been crying. Lana put her arm around Jaxon and laid her hand on his shoulder.

“You deserve better, J,” Lana said. “You don’t deserve the pain he’s caused you.”

“You don’t understand,” Jaxon replied. “James is fragile. I’m so scared of what may happen. I meant what I sang during country week. I can’t believe I’d give up on him like that.”

“You’re tired of fighting and struggling, Jaxon. You deserve a break. When James has straightened his life out, then you can go back to being with him. But right now, you’re wearing yourself out emotionally. Take a break and don’t feel guilty about it.”

“The stage, music, it’s my coping mechanism, Jaxon said. “Performing is such a rush for me.”

“Then get up on the stage and sing it out,” Honey said from behind Jaxon. “It helps.”

Jaxon nodded and he stood up.

“Where are you going?” Hallie asked.

“To sing it out,” Jaxon said. “I’ll be ready in fifteen.”

___________________________________________________________

The audience cheered as Jaxon stepped out onto the stage, in full Adam Lambert glam style. Eyeliner, glitter, spiky hair, and dressed head to toe in leather and metal.

“Look guys,” Miles said with a smile. “The old Jaxon is back.”

“We love you, Jaxon,” Hallie, Bella, and Lana screamed as they pretended to fangirl.

Jaxon smiled at them as he prepared his headset microphone. The stage floor began to light up like a multicolored dance floor. A disco ball dropped down and began to spin, reflecting the rainbow colored laser lights all around the auditorium.

“Turn around, stand up like a man and look me in the eye,” Jaxon sang, looking at James. “Turn around, take one final look at what you've left behind. Then walk away' ''from the greatest lover you have ever known. Yes, walk away. You're telling me that you can make it on your own, by yourself all alone without my help. Mister you just made a big mistake.”

James crossed his arms and rolled his eyes.

“You think you're a man but you're only a boy. You think you're a man, you are only a toy. You think you're a man but you just couldn't see. You were not man enough to satisfy me. Boy, boy, boy, boy, toy. Shut the door, take a look around and tell me what you find. Shut the door, take a giant step for you and all mankind. Then don't come back. I always gave you so much more than you deserve. No don't come back 'cause no one makes a fool of me. You've got a nerve to walk away, mark the words I'm gonna say. Mister you just made a big mistake.”

Jaxon smiled at Lana as he broke into a full on dance routine.

“You think you're a man but you're only a boy. You think you're a man, you are only a toy. You think you're a man but you just couldn't see. You were not man enough to satisfy me.”

The giant disco ball lowered to the ground and Jaxon grabbed onto it. He laughed out loud.

“Where are the men?” Jaxon asked. “Oh yeah, get on outta here!”

Adam and few other male members of the Cheerios paraded out onto the stage and began to dance around Jaxon. Jaxon pulled himself into a sitting position on the disco ball as it started to spin and pulled him straight up, almost to the ceiling. The other students were in awe as the watched Jaxon.

“Shut the door, take a giant step for you and all mankind. Then don't come back. I always gave you so much more than you deserve. No don't come back 'cause no one makes a fool of me. You've got a nerve to walk away, mark the words I'm gonna say. Mister you just made a big mistake. You think you're a man but you're only a boy. You think you're a man, you are only a toy. You think you're a man but you just couldn't see. You were not man enough to satisfy me. Man, boy, boy, boy, boy, toy.”

The disco ball dropped back down and Jaxon hopped off to the sound of a standing ovation from everyone but James, who sat in his seat quietly.

Honey clutched Declan’s hand tightly as they walked down the hall. Declan smiled at her.

“Thank you so much for agreeing to come with me to meet Shelby,” Honey said.

“I have to be there to support you. This is huge,” Declan said.

“I really want to know my real mom. Is that such a bad thing? Why is everyone treating me like I’m some little kid? I’m not.”

“I’m not treating you like some little kid,” Declan said. “I’ve supported you from the beginning.”

“Not you,” Honey said. She looked up and her heart skipped a beat. “Them.”

Honey sighed as Rachel, Hiram, and Leroy walked toward her.

“I should probably go,” Declan said. “No offense but your dad scares me ever since he told me he’d turn my junk into a hood ornament if he ever found out we did anything. So, yeah, leaving now.”

“Which one scares you?” Honey asked Declan, but he was already too far gone.

“Hello, cupcake,” Hiram said. “We need to have a little talk.”

“I don’t wanna talk to any of you,” Honey said. She turned to walk away, but Rachel grabbed her arm.

“Honey, I love you. Please just listen to me,” Rachel said.

Honey turned back around to face Rachel. “Okay. I’ll listen. But make it quick.”

“I understand your curiosity and desire to see your real mother. But it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Shelby isn’t your mom. She’s your mother. She wasn’t there for you when you needed her. She wasn’t there when you were a baby to rock you to sleep. A mother and a mom are two different things and I wish I had realized it. You have plenty of time in the future, when you are ready, to meet her. But you’re hurting from losing your parents, still. If you seek her out now, it will only make things worse. She’ll never live up to your expectations, but right now you’re expectations are really high. You’re only setting yourself up for disappointment.”

Honey nodded, tears in her eyes. Rachel reached out and grabbed Honey, hugging her tightly.

“We always knew Shelby was your real mother,” Leroy said. “Your parents were close friends of ours. We made a promise that if anything ever happened to them, we’d adopt you so you could be closer to your sister, Rachel. We were going to tell you once you turned eighteen. We didn’t think you were ready yet.”

Honey nodded as she wiped tears from her eyes. “I understand.”

Rachel took Honey’s hand. “So, since I’m home for Christmas holidays early, who about we go do some Christmas shopping and I’ll buy you something really great for Christmas and we’ll go get some gelato?”

“Sounds like a plan,” Honey said, smiling.

As Rachel and Honey walked off, hand-in-hand, Hiram and Leroy smiled at each other happily.

Once Lucas had been safely escorted home, Evan returned to McKinley to meet up with Jaxon after football practice. They were busy preparing for the championship, which they hoped to win again.

As Evan made his way down the hall, he saw Chad coming toward him.

I really wanna punch this guy in his face for everything he’s done. He’s a major jerk and if you ask me, he deserves it.

“Evan, right?” Chad asked. “You’re dating Lucas?”

“Yeah, what’s it to you? Evan snapped.

“I’ve been taking anger management and we have this thing we have to do where we apologize to the people our anger has hurt. I tried to apologize to him yesterday, but he ran away.”

“Maybe because you put him in the hospital and almost killed him,” Evan said, his fist clenched.

“I know, and I’m sorry. It’s something that’s hard to explain. But, I really do want to apologize to him, so if we could maybe work something out?”

“I don’t deal with bullies like you,” Evan said.

“You used to be one, didn’t you? And everyone forgave you. So why can’t you forgive me?”

“Because you nearly killed the one guy I’ve ever truly loved! I was at the hospital, by his side every day! I prayed to God to let him live and not be disabled for the rest of his life because of you! Do you even understand what it did not just to him, but me? The rest of the people who love him?”

“I’m gay,” Chad said. “I was bullied at my old school. That’s why I left. Louis was my first friend here, but he was so homophobic and he started to suspect I was gay. So I tried hard to hide it, presenting myself as really homophobic too. Then, he talked me into attacking Lucas. It was his idea. I followed through because I was so scared and desperate. Please, Evan, you can’t tell anyone I’m gay. I am sorry for hurting Lucas, I am. I never meant for it to go so far but once I hit him, this rage I felt at myself took over and I couldn’t stop.”

Evan glared at Chad. “How am I supposed to believe that?”

“Because it’s the truth,” Chad said. “In the Glee Club, I heard that you sing about something when it’s hard to express it through your own words. I wanna do that.”

“You have got to be kidding me,” Evan said, rolling his eyes.

“Caught up in this madness too blind to see,” Chad sang. “Woke animal feelings in me. Took over my sense and I lost control. I'll taste your blood tonight. You know I make you wanna scream. You know I make you wanna run from me baby. But know it's too late, you've wasted all your time.”

“Relax while you're closing your eyes to me,” Evan joined in. “So warm as I'm setting you free. With your arms by your side there's no struggling. Pleasure's all mine this time.”

“You know I make you wanna scream,”Chad and Evan sang. “You know I make you wanna run from me baby. But know it's too late, you've wasted all your time.”

“Cherishing, those feelings pleasuring,”Chad sang. “Cover me, unwanted clemency. Scream till there's silence.”

“Scream while there's life left, vanishing,” Evan sang. “Scream from the pleasure, unmask your desire perishing.”

“We've all had a time where we've lost control,” Chad sang. “We've all had our time to grow,. I'm hoping I'm wrong but I know I'm right, I'll hunt again one night.”

“You know I make you wanna scream,” Evan sang. “You know I make you wanna run from me baby. But know it's too late. you've wasted all your time.”

“Cherishing, those feelings pleasuring,” Chad and Evan sang. “Cover me, unwanted clemency. Scream till there's silence, scream while there's life left, vanishing. Scream from the pleasure, unmask your desire perishing.”

“Some live repressing their instinctive feelings,” Chad sang.

“Protest the way we're built, don't point the blame on me,” Evan sang.

“Scream, scream, scream the way you would if I ravaged your body,” Chad sang. “Scream, scream, scream the way you would if I ravaged your mind.”

“Cherishing, those feelings pleasuring,” Chad and Evan sang. “Cover me, unwanted clemency. Scream till there's silence, scream while there's life left, vanishing. Scream from the pleasure, unmask your desire perishing.”

“Let me prove myself to you,” Chad said.

Chad reached forward and grabbed Evan, pulling him in. He kissed Evan, hungrily. Evan pushed Chad off of him.

“Hey! Get off of me!” Evan said. “I have a boyfriend and it sure as hell isn’t you.”

Chas nodded, angry at the rebuff. He turned around and stormed off as Evan wiped the kiss off his lips, disgusted.

____________________________________________________________

Lucas threw open his dresser and searched frantically for something. He tossed his clothes aside until her found it. A switchblade. He shoved it in his pocket as he dashed out the front door and started walking back toward the school.

“Now I know that I can't make you stay,”Lucas sang, walking down the sidewalk, his gaze focused straight ahead. “But where's your heart? But where's your heart? But where's your? And I know there's nothing I could say to change that part. To change that part. To change. So many bright lights to cast a shadow, but can I speak? Well, is it hard understanding I'm incomplete? A life that's so demanding, I get so weak. A love that's so demanding, I can't speak.”

Lucas looked angry as he pulled the hoodie of his jacket over his head and shoved his hands in his pockets.

“I am not afraid to keep on living. I am not afraid to walk this world alone. Honey if you stay, I'll be forgiven. Nothing you could say can stop me going home. Can you see my eyes are shining bright? Cause I'm out here on the other side of a jet black hotel mirror and I'm so weak. Is it hard understanding I'm incomplete? A love that's so demanding I get weak. I am not afraid to keep on living. I am not afraid to walk this world alone. Honey if you stay, I'll be forgiven. Nothing you could say can stop me going home. I am not afraid to keep on living. I am not afraid to walk this world alone. Honey if you stay, I'll be forgiven. Nothing you could say can stop me going home. These bright lights have always blinded me, these bright lights have always blinded me I say.”

Lucas came to a stop outside McKinley and stood there, staring as he continued to sing.

“I see you lying next to me with words I thought I'd never speak. Awake and unafraid, asleep or dead. 'Cause I see you lying next to me with words I thought I'd never speak. Awake and unafraid, asleep or dead. I see you lying next to me with words I thought I'd never speak. Awake and unafraid, asleep or dead. I am not afraid to keep on living. I am not afraid to walk this world alone or dead. Honey if you stay, I'll be forgiven. Nothing you can say can stop me going home or dead. I am not afraid to keep on living. I am not afraid to walk this world alone or dead. Honey if you stay, I'll be forgiven. Nothing you can say can stop me going home or dead. I am not afraid to keep on living. I am not afraid to walk this world alone or dead. Honey if you stay, I'll be forgiven. Nothing you can say can stop me going home or dead.”

Evan, Jaxon, Kevin, and Miles were making their way down the hall, back from football practice, when Lucas met up with them.

“What are you doing here?” Evan asked, grabbing Lucas.

Lucas smiled at Evan. “I’m not afraid. I’m not afraid.”

Evan looked at Lucas, confused, as Lucas pulled the switchblade out of his pocket. Jaxon, Miles, and Kevin’s eyes went wide with shock.

“Put that away before you get expelled!” Evan said.

“I’m not afraid,” Lucas said, breaking down in tears. He dropped the switchblade, which slid across the floor to Jaxon’s feet. Jaxon picked it up and put it in the trashcan. He shoved it really far down, so it wouldn’t be noticed.

“Bravery doesn’t come from a weapon,” Evan said, hugging Lucas.

“It comes from the wizard of Oz,” Kevin said.

Jaxon shot Kevin a look as Miles smacked Kevin in the back of the head. Kevin rubbed his head.

“It comes from inside you and from the support of really good friends like we have,” Evan added.

Miles, Jaxon, and Kevin smiled as the put their hands on Lucas’s shoulders as Evan pulled him into a hug.

“Besides, I don’t think it’s Chad we have to worry about,” Evan said. “It was all Louis’ idea.”

Lucas looked up at Evan, the fear in his eyes was instense.

“But we’re not gonna be afraid anymore,” Evan assured. “No more fear, Lucas.”

New Directions stood onstage in the auditorium, dressed in converse, blue jeans, wife beaters, and each wore a different color hoodie. Behind them, the video screen showed an image of a rooftop, high above a busy city.

“I'm not afraid, I'm not afraid,” New Directions sang. “To take a stand, to take a stand. Everybody, everybody. Come take my hand, come take my hand. We'll walk this road together, through the storm. Whatever weather, cold or warm. Just letting you know that, you're not alone. Holla if you feel like you've been down the same road, same road.”

“You could try and read my lyrics off of this paper before I lay 'em,” Miles rapped. “But you won't take the sting out these words before I say 'em. Cause ain't no way I'ma let you stop me from causing mayhem. When I say I'ma do something I do it, I don't give a damn what you think. I'm doing this for me, so forget the world. Feed it beans, it's gassed up, if it thinks it's stopping me. I'ma be what I set out to be, without a doubt undoubtedly. And all those who look down on me I'm tearing down your balcony. No if ands or buts, don't try to ask him why or how can he. From infinite down to the last relapse album, he's still sitting, whether he's on salary paid hourly. Until he bows out or he spits his vowels out of him. Whichever comes first, for better or worse. He's married to the game, like a forget you for Christmas. His gift is a curse, forget the Earth, he's got the urge to pull his stick from the dirt, and beat the whole universe.”

“Okay quit playing with the scissors and stuff, and cut the crap,” Evan rapped. “I shouldn't have to rhyme these words in the rhythm for you to know it's a rap. You said you was king, you lied through your teeth, for that. Forget your feelings, instead of getting crowned you're getting capped. And to the fans, I'll never let you down again, I'm back. I promise to never go back on that promise, in fact. Let's be honest, that last relapse CD was eh. Perhaps I ran them accents into the ground. Relax, I ain't going back to that now. All I'm trying to say is get back, click-clack, blaow. Cause I ain't playing around. It's a game called circle and I don't know how, I'm way too up to back down. But I think I'm still trying to figure this crap out. Thought I had it mapped out but I guess I didn't, this freaking black cloud still follows, me around but it's time to exorcise these demons. These stupid brothers are doing jumping jacks now!”

“And I just can't keep living this way,” Jaxon sang. “So starting today, I'm breaking out of this cage.”

“I'm standing up, I'ma face my demons,” Lucas sang. “I'm manning up, I'ma hold my ground. I've had enough, now I'm so fed up. Time to put my life back together right now.”

“It was my decision to get clean, I did it for me,” Rose rapped. “Admittedly, I probably did it subliminally for you, so I could come back a brand new me you helped see me through. And don't even realize what you did, believe me you. I been through the ringer, but they could do little to the middle finger. I think I got a tear in my eye, I feel like the queen of my world, haters can make like bees with no stingers and drop dead, no more beef flingers. No more drama from now on, I promise to focus solely on handling my responsibilities as a student. So I solemnly swear to always treat this roof, like my grades and raise it, you couldn't lift a single shingle on it! Cause the way I feel, I'm strong enough to go to the club or the corner pub, and lift the whole liquor counter up. Cause I'm raising the bar, I'd shoot for the moon but I'm too busy gazing at stars. I feel amazing and I'm--”

As soon as the song was over, Bella started down the steps. Hallie started after her.

“Where are you going in such a hurry?” Hallie asked.

“I’m meeting Reece for some hot chocolate at the Lima Bean. Why?” Bella asked.

“Cuz you didn’t even say goodbye to your friends. Reece is all you care about and everyone else just gets cast aside. And what are you gonna do, hurt him too?”

“Hallie, you’re blowing this out of proportion,” Bella said.

“He’s my cousin and I don’t wanna see him hurt.”

“Who really hurt who?” Bella asked.

“You hurt me long before I hurt you. Please, just get over it.”

“I’m trying but you won’t let me. So you can move on to Lana but I can’t move on to Reece? Yeah, sounds fair.”

Bella grabbed her backpack and jogged out the door. Hallie sighed as Lana appeared beside her.

“What’s going on?” Lana asked.

“She’s meeting Reece,” Hallie said.

“And why is that a problem?” Lana asked. “I thought you moved on. You’re with me, now.”

“It’s not about me, per se. It’s Reece. He’s a good guy but he’s kinda naïve. I just don’t wanna see my cousin get hurt by Bella like she hurt me. Multiple times.”

“But you have me now, so let’s just get over the pain she caused it. It’s worthless now.”

“I never meant to upset you,” Hallie said.

“I just never let people in like I did you. I love you, Hallie. I never want to lose you.”

Hallie smiled as she kissed Lana on the cheek. “You’re never gonna lose me. I am head over heels, madly in love with you.”

Rachel sighed as the doorbell rang again. She made her way over to the door and answered it. Her mouth dropped open when she saw who it was.

“Shelby?” Rachel asked, shocked.

“Hey, Rachel. I got a call from Honey the other day. She wanted to meet me and ask me a few questions yesterday, but she never showed. I was wondering if it was important.”

Rachel didn’t say anything as she just held the door.
