In the choir room, Jaxon sat beside James, who had his face buried in his hands. Bella walked in and upon seeing James, she took a seat beside him.

“What’s wrong?” Bella asked Jaxon.

“It’s his parents. They kicked him out last night. He’s been staying with me,” Jaxon replied.

“Oh my god,” Bella said, shocked. “Why?”

“I don’t know,” Jaxon said. “He has yet to say two words to me. He’s just cried all night and all day.”

“You need to get things out,” Nicole said.

“Good luck trying,” Jaxon replied. “I haven’t been able to get through to him and I’m running on three hours of sleep as a result.”

“That’s not healthy, Jaxon,” Nicole said.

“I care too much about him,” Jaxon said.

“Somehow my dad found out about what we did,” James said through his hands.

“What did you do?” Bella asked.

“We did it,” James said, softly.

“I didn’t hear you,” Bella said.

“We had sex,” James said in a louder voice.

Jaxon’s faced turned red and he slouched down in his seat to avoid all the eyes he knew was on him.

“Oh my god!” Bella said, a smile on her face. “Jaxon! Why didn’t you tell me?”

“If I don’t move they can’t see me,” Jaxon told himself. “Just like a T-Rex.”

“So, wait, when did this happen?” Evan asked.

“It’s no big deal,” Jaxon said. “Our sex life, or lack thereof doesn’t strike me as an important conversation right now.”

“Agreed,” Hallie said. “Can’t we restrict the conversation to helping James with the issue concerning his parents?”

“My dad hits me,” James said. “I was too afraid to say anything but after what my dad said, last night, I just don’t care.”

“What did he say?” Jaxon asked.

“That he didn’t care if I died on the streets. I wasn’t his son and I wasn’t allowed there anymore,” James said, brushing a tear from his cheeks.

Jaxon stood up, but he felt too hands cup his wrists. He looked back to see it was Kevin and Evan.

“Jaxon, don’t do anything stupid,” Kevin said.

“Whatever you do can make things worse on James,” Evan added.

“I’m furious, okay?”

“Just sit down and cool off,” Hallie said.

Jaxon nodded. “Okay. I will. I won’t say anything. I promise.”

“Good afternoon, class,” Will said as he walked into the classroom. “First of all, I have a brilliant idea for Nationals. Who wants to hear it?”

The choir room erupted with cheers.

“Okay,” Will said. “Our setlist for Nationals will be song spaying tribute to the Entertainment Capital of the World itself. That’s right, songs about Vegas!”

“So awesome,” Honey said.

“So, any suggestions?” Will asked.

“We should do ‘Waking Up In Vegas’ by Katy Perry,” Hallie said.

“Great idea,” Will said. “Any other songs, guys? What about our duet for Nicole and Miles?”

“I know an amazing ballad that I would love to sing,” Nicole said.

“Great, Nicole. What is it?” Will asked.

“It’s ‘Leaving Las Vegas’ by Sheryl Crow,” Nicole responded, smiling.

“I love that song, Nicole,” Will said. “Good choice.”

“How about ‘Pretty Vegas’ by INXS?” Jaxon asked. “I love that song and in my opinion, we need to do some rock for Nationals.”

“I love these ideas, guys,” Will said. “I think we have a kick butt setlist for Nationals! Alright, does anyone have a song they would like to sing?”

Jaxon raised his hand. “I think James should.”

Will looked over at James, who was drying his eyes. “What’s wrong?”

“His parents found out that he was gay and his dad beat him up and kicked him out,” Jaxon said.

“What?” Will asked, obviously floored. “We should talk to child protective services.”

“No!” James protested. “They’ll put me into foster care and I’ll be taken away somewhere else. At least this way, I’m with Jaxon. And also, you guys.”

Will nodded. “I understand, James. So would you like to come up and sing about how you feel?”

James wiped his eyes as he stood up. “This is a song that has been in my head last night. It really sums up for my feelings for my dad at the moment. It would really help me to sing it right now.”

“Go ahead,” Will said.

“If I'm a bad person, you don't like me,”James sang. “Well, I guess I'll make my own way. It's a circle, a mean cycle. I can't please you anymore. Where's your gavel? Your jury? What's my offense this time? You're not a judge but if you're gonna judge me. Well, sentence me to another life. Don't wanna hear your sad songs, I don't wanna feel your pain when you swear it's all my fault. 'Cause you know we're not the same. No, we're not the same, oh, we're not the same. We're the family who stuck together. We wrote our names in blood but I guess you can't accept that the change is good. It's good, it's good. Well, you treat me just like another stranger. Well, it's nice to meet you, sir. I guess I'll go, I best be on my way out. You treat me just like another stranger. Well, it's nice to meet you, sir. I guess I'll go, I best be on my way out. Ignorance is your new best friend. Ignorance is your new best friend.”

James swallowed the lump in his throat, grabbed the microphone off the stand, and continued.

“This is the best thing that could've happened. Any longer and I wouldn't have made it. It's not a war, no, it's not a rapture. I'm just a person but you can't take it. The same tricks that, that once fooled me, they won't get you anywhere. I'm not the same kid from your memory. Well, now I can fend for myself. Don't wanna hear your sad songs, I don't wanna feel your pain when you swear it's all my fault. 'Cause you know we're not the same. No, we're not the same, oh, we're not the same. Yeah, we used to stick together. Ignorance is your new best friend. Ignorance is your new best friend. Ignorance is your new best friend.”

The anger and pain seemed to drip off of every word James sung. Every eye in the choir room was on him.

“Well, you treat me just like another stranger. Well, it's nice to meet you, sir. Well, I guess I'll go, I best be on my way out. You treat me just like another stranger. Well, it's nice to meet you, sir. I guess I'll go, I best be on my way out.”

When James had finished, the entire choir room was on their feet, applauding.

Will sighed as he looked at Emma.

“I don’t know what to do with the whole James situation,” Will said. “I mean, his dad was a complete jerk to beat him up and kick him out. I feel like CPS should be called, but then again, he’s completely happy where he’s at now and at least he’s being taken care of.”

“Well, for legal reason, Jaxon’s family is not James’ real family,” Emma said.

“I know,” Will said. “I just don’t want James to be separated from the things and people he loves.”

“But we owe it to James to get this thing settled legally. I’m sure if you talk to CPS and explain the situation, something can be worked out. We just need to ensure that Jaxon and his family are free from the legal issues involved with taking in a minor who is not their own blood.”

Will nodded. “Worse comes to worse, James will be eighteen in less than two years. I just hope he can hang in there for that long.”

Bella stood in the middle of the choir room, her back to the others. As the music began to play, she began to dance to the music.

“Give it your all girl, give it all you got,” Bella sang. “You can take your chances, take your best shot. Say what you want girl, do whatcha do. He's never gonna, gonna make it with you. Pulling petals of a flower trying to get your way. Keep pulling till it says what you wanna say. Girl, you can pick a field full of daisies, but he'd still be my baby. And I know you can hardly wait till I'm away from him. See, instinctively I know what you’re thinking. You'll be giving him an open invitation, but my baby won't be taken in.

Bella walked over and grabbed Miles. She began to dance with him a little as she glared at India.

“You can pout your cherry lips. Try to tempt him with a sweet kiss. You can flirt your pretty eyes. He ain't got his hands tied. No chains to unlock, so free to do what he wants. He's into what he's got. He loves me, he loves you not. No matter what you do, he's never gonna be with you. He's into what he's got. He loves me, he loves you not.”

Bella grabbed Miles by the collar of his shirt and led him across the choir room as she sang.

“You're the kinda girl that’s always up for do-or-dare. Only want him just because he's there. Always looking for a new ride. The grass is greener on the other side. You're the kinda girl who's not used to hearing no. All your lovers try to take you where you wanna go. Doesn't matter how hard you try, never gonna get with my guy.”

Bella pushed Miles away playfully and blew him a kiss before he headed back to his seat

“No chains to unlock, so free to do what he wants. He's into what he's got. He loves me, he loves you not. No matter what you do, he's never gonna be with you. He's into what he's got. He loves me, he loves you not. Doesn't matter what you do, he's never gonna be with you. Give it your all girl, give it all you got. You can take a chance, and take your best shot. Say what you want girl, do whatcha do. He's never gonna make it with you. You can pout your cherry lips. He loves me, he loves you not. No chains to unlock, so free to do what he wants. He's into what he's got. He loves me, he loves you not. No matter what you do, he's never gonna be with you. He's into what he's got. He loves me, he loves you not.”

Bella struck a pose as the song ended, her hands on her hip and her head titled back. India was not impressed and rolled her eyes.

Will clapped. “Great job, Bella. Would anyone else like to come up here and sing a song?”

Jaxon raised his hand. “Actually, Evan and I have been working on something we would like to perform for James.”

“Great. Come on up, guys,” Will said with a smile.

Jaxon and Evan grabbed their guitars and walked to the middle of the choir room and took a seat on two stools that Will had moved into position.

“This is for you, James,” Jaxon said.

“We want you to know that everything is gonna be alright,” Evan sang.

“You’re not alone,” Jaxon said.

Jaxon and James began to strum their guitars in unison.

“Have you lost your way?” Jaxon sang. “Living in the shadow of the messes that you made. And so it goes, everything inside your circle starts to overflow.”

“Take a step before you leap into the colors that you seek,” Evan sang. “You give back what you give away. So don't look back on yesterday.”

“Wanna scream out, no more hiding,”Jaxon and Evan sang. “Don't be afraid of what's inside. Gonna tell ya, you'll be alright in the aftermath. Anytime anybody pulls you down. Anytime anybody says you're not allowed. Just remember, you are not alone in the aftermath.”

“You feel the weight,”Jaxon sang. “Of lies and contradictions that you live with every day.”

“It's not too late,”Evan sang. “Think of what could be if you rewrite the role you play.”

“Take a step before you leap into the colors that you seek,” Jaxon sang.

“Before you break you have to shed your armor,”Evan sang. “Take a trip and fall into the glitter.”

Tell a stranger that they’re beautiful,”Jaxon sang. “So all you feel is love, love. All you feel is love, love.”

“Wanna scream out, no more hiding,”Jaxon and Evan sang. “Don't be afraid of what's inside. Wanna tell ya, you'll be alright in the aftermath. Anytime anybody pulls you down. Anytime anybody says you're not allowed. Just remember, you are not alone in the aftermath. Wanna scream out, no more hiding. Don't be afraid of what's inside. Gonna tell ya, you'll be alright in the aftermath. Anytime anybody pulls you down. Anytime anybody says you're not allowed. Just remember, you are not alone in the aftermath.”

“In the aftermath,” Evan sang.

“Gonna tell ya you'll be alright,”Jaxon sang.

“In the aftermath.”

“In the aftermath.”

“Just remember you are not alone,”

“In the aftermath,”they both sang.

James smiled big as they song came to an end. He felt a hand on his shoulder and looked up to see Mr. Schue. James stood up and walked over to Jaxon and Evan and pulled them in for a group hug.

Lucas shut his locker and started to walk down the hall. All of a sudden, he found himself frozen in fear as he looked at the exact spot where Lucas had first called him a gay slur.

He stood there frozen, replaying the events in his head, unable to move from this spot.

He felt a hand on his shoulder and jumped.

“Stop!” Lucas yelled, louder than he had intended. He stood there shocked, unable to believe that he had just flipped out like this.

“Are you okay?” Evan asked.

Lucas shook his head. “I lied.”

Evan raised an eyebrow. “When? To who?”

“Mr. Schue. I said I was okay, but I’m not. I’m a huge mess. Anyone touches me or moves suddenly and I see the events replay in my head. I freak out. I’m such a completely mess, Evan.”

“Lucas, after what you’ve been through, it’s understandable. You were attacked, okay? It’s traumatizing.”

“Do you think I’m a spaz?” Lucas asked, tears in his eyes.

“No, Lucas. I don’t. You’re anything but.”

Lucas smiled warmly. “Thanks, Evan.”

“But I do think it would be a great idea for you to see Mrs. Pillsbury-Schuester. She can help you, Lucas. She’s helped me a lot.”

Lucas nodded. “Okay.”

“Are you coming to the auditorium to perform with us?” Evan asked.

“Yeah. I’ll be there. But, could you walk with me? I don’t wanna walk down this hallway alone just yet.”

Evan nodded.

New Directions stood onstage, bathed in a warm spotlight as the music began softly.

“From underneath the trees, we watch the sky,” Jaxon sang. “Confusing stars for satellites. I never dreamed that you'd be mine. But here we are, we're here tonight.”

“Singing amen, I, I'm alive,” James sang. “I’m alive. Singing Amen, I, I'm alive.”

“If everyone cared and nobody cried,” New Directions sang. “If everyone loved and nobody lied. If everyone shared and swallowed their pride. Then we'd see the day when nobody died. And I'm singing amen I, amen I, I'm alive. Amen I, amen I, amen I, I'm alive.”

Lucas opened his mouth and started to sing his verse, but he couldn’t do it. As he froze up, the events of his beating replayed in his head. After about five seconds of awkward silence, Evan jumped to Lucas’s rescue.

“And in the air, the fireflies,” Evan sang. “Our only light in paradise. We'll show the world they were wrong and teach them all to sing along.”

Finally mustering the courage, Lucas began to sing the line originally meant for Evan. And as he sang it, it took on new meaning.

“Singing amen, I, I'm alive. I’m alive. Singing amen, I, I'm alive.”

Evan smiled at Lucas as they began to sing the chorus.

“If everyone cared and nobody cried,” New Directions sang. “If everyone loved and nobody lied. If everyone shared and swallowed their pride. Then we'd see the day when nobody died. If everyone cared and nobody cried. If everyone loved and nobody lied. If everyone shared and swallowed their pride. Then we'd see the day when nobody died. Nobody died.”

“And as we lie beneath the stars,”Hallie sang. “We realize how small we are. If they could love like you and me, imagine what the world could be.”

We'd see the day, we'd see the day when nobody died. We'd see the day, we'd see the day when nobody died. We'd see the day when nobody died.”

As everyone else scrambled to leave the auditorium, Bella stayed behind to think. She heard the resounding click of designer shoes on the stage behind her an realized that she was not alone.

“I guess you haven’t heard the news,” India said. “New Directions has been invited to attend the prom as performers. We get to dance in-between numbers. It’s a big deal considering most of us are only sophomores and it is after all, a junior prom.”

“Yea, I guess,” Bella said.

“I wanted to let you know that I’m taking Miles as my date.”

Bella stopped, placed her hand on her hip, and turned to face India.

“That is where you’d be mistaken, Miss Priss. Miles is still my boyfriend despite what you did. Which means, I’m taking him to prom.”

“You might could take him to prom, but he’d be going home with me.”

“Geez, why are you such a bitch?” Bella asked.

“Because it’s in my pedigree. Donatella Versace is personally designing my prom dress especially for me. I’m practically royalty in London. I’m sure as hell a socialite. You’re absolutely nothing compared to me. I’ve earned it, Sweet Cheeks.”

“There is one thing you haven’t earned, India. Miles’ love. That belongs to me.”

“Does he love you?” India asked. “Are you so certain of that?”

Bella grabbed a microphone. “Sing off. Right here, right now. Prove you’re better than me, India.”

India laughed as she grabbed a microphone. “Oh this shall be fun.”

“I've known about you for a while now,” Bella sang. “When he leaves me he wears a smile now. As soon as he's away from me, in your arms is where he wants to be.”

“But you're the one he rushes home to,”India sang. “You're the one he gave his name to. I never see his face in the early morning light. You have his mornings, his daytimes and sometimes I have his nights.”

“But does he love you?” Bella sang.

“Does he love you?” India sang.

“Like he loves me?”

“Like he loves me?”

“Does he think of you?”

“Does he think of you?”

“When he's holding me?” They both sang.

“And does he whisper?” Bella sang.

“Does he whisper?” India sang.

“All of his fantasies ?” They both sang.

“Does he love you?” Bella sang.

“Does he love you?” India sang.

“Like he's been loving me?” They both sang.

“But when he's with me, he says he needs me,” India sang. “And that he wants me, that he believes in me.”

“And when I'm in his arms, oh he swears there's no one else,” Bella sang. “Is he deceiving me, or am I deceiving myself?”

“Oh, shouldn’t I lose my temper?” Bella sang.

“Oh, shouldn’t I be ashamed?” India sang.

“Cause I have everything to lose.”

“And I, I have nothing to gain.”

Bella glared at India. “I wish I could blow you up in a boat like Reba did that other girl at the end of the video.”

“Boat? Please, India only takes to the water in a yacht. Boats are so…common place.”

“Trust me, India. Miles will not choose you.”

“It’s the best thing that could happen, Bella. When are you gonna open your eyes and see that? Stop kidding yourself, damn it.”

India turned around and walked out, the clicking of her designer heels growing fainter as she neared the exit.

Will walked into the choir room, waving at everyone as he took his place in front of the dry erase board.

“We already know that Miles and Nicole get a duet for Nationals, but I’ve been thinking about what to do with the ‘Pretty Vegas’ number. After the performance I saw from Jaxon and Evan yesterday, I think we could win if I let them sing the lead on it. That stripped down, acoustic version of ‘Aftermath’ was amazing, guys. You two have great musical chemistry.”

“Thanks, Mr. Schue,” Evan said.

“So, I was wondering who wants to prepare for Sectionals with a fun little number? We haven’t really cut loose in this choir room with a fun number in a while and I feel it’s time.”

“What did you have in mind?” Rose asked.

“Well,” Will said. “This group has been through a lot, and no matter what, you’ve pulled through. You’ve survived. So, I have chosen ‘Survivor’ by Destiny’s Child. And I want Lucas to take the lead on the song.”

Lucas smiled. “You sure I’m ready, Mr. Schue?”

Will smiled. “I know you are. Lucas, this song will be your empowerment. Never let people stop you from living your life. You are a survivor.”

Lucas nodded as he stood up.

“Now that you're out of my life, I'm so much better,” Lucas sang. “You thought that I'd be weak without you, but I'm stronger. You thought that I'd be broke without you, but I'm richer. You thought that I'd be sad without you, I laugh harder. You thought I wouldn't grow without you, now I'm wiser. Thought that I'd be helpless without you, but I'm smarter. You thought that I'd be stressed without you, but I'm chillin'. You thought I wouldn't sell without you, sold nine million.”

“I'm a survivor,” New Directions sang. “What? I'm not gonna give up. What? I'm not gonna stop. What? I'm gon work harder. What? I'm a survivor. What? I'm gonna make it. What? I will survive. What? Keep on survivin'. What?'I'm a survivor. What? I'm not gon give up. What? I'm not gonna stop. What? I'm gon work harder. What? I'm a survivor. What? I'm gonna make it. What? I will survive. What? Keep on survivin'. What?

As they sang, New Direction began to dance together, giving in to the music, smiles all around. It really was an empowering song for them.

“Thought I couldn't breathe without, I'm inhaling,” Lucas sang. “You thought I couldn't see without you, perfect vision. You thought I couldn't last without you, but I'm lastin'. You thought that I would die without you, but I'm livin'. Thought that I would fail without you, but I'm on top. Thought it would be over by now, but it won't stop. Thought that I would self-destruct, but I'm still here. Even in my years to come, I'm still gonna be here.”

“I'm a survivor,” New Directions sang. “What? I'm not gonna give up. What? I'm not gonna stop. What? I'm gon work harder. What? I'm a survivor. What? I'm gonna make it. What? I will survive. What? Keep on survivin'. What?'I'm a survivor. What? I'm not gon give up. What? I'm not gonna stop. What? I'm gon work harder. What? I'm a survivor. What? I'm gonna make it. What? I will survive. What? Keep on survivin'. What?

“I'm wishin' you the best,” the boys sang. “Pray that you are blessed. Bring much success, no stress, and lots of happiness.”

“I'm better than that,” the girls sang.

“I'm not gonna blast you on the radio.”

“I'm better than that.”

“I'm not gonna lie on you and your family.”

“I'm better than that.”

“I'm not gonna hate on you in the magazines.”

“I'm better than that.”

“I'm not gonna compromise my Christianity.”

“I'm better than that.”

“You know I'm not gonna diss you on the internet.”

“Cause my mama taught me better than that,” New Directions sang.

“I'm a survivor,” New Directions sang. “What? I'm not gonna give up. What? I'm not gonna stop. What? I'm gon work harder. What? I'm a survivor. What? I'm gonna make it. What? I will survive. What? Keep on survivin'. What?'I'm a survivor. What? I'm not gon give up. What? I'm not gonna stop. What? I'm gon work harder. What? I'm a survivor. What? I'm gonna make it. What? I will survive. What? Keep on survivin'. What?

“After of all of the darkness and sadness,” Lucas sang. “Soon comes happiness. If I surround myself with positive things, I'll gain prosperity.”

“I'm a survivor,” New Directions sang. “What? I'm not gonna give up. What? I'm not gonna stop. What? I'm gon work harder. What? I'm a survivor. What? I'm gonna make it. What? I will survive. What? Keep on survivin’.

Bella walked over to Miles, her hand on her hip.

“So, what’s it gonna be, Miles?” She asked. “Who are you gonna take as your date to prom? And before you answer, just know. Whoever you choose, is who you get. You choose me, India has to go. If you choose her, we’re over. For good.”

Miles thought for a second, unsure of what to say.
